UPI Kicks Off BTEC Program with a Focus on Practical Skills and Student Success

On 7th July 2025, ULK Polytechnic Institute (UPI) officially launched its highly anticipated Bachelor of Technology program, welcoming its first cohort of students with a strong emphasis on practical, competency-based learning, and a commitment to student excellence. The opening ceremony, held at ULK’s stadium, featured inspiring remarks from the institute’s leadership and key officials, all highlighting the institution’s dedication to producing graduates who will contribute significantly to national development.

Prof. Dr. Rwigamba Balinda, Founder and President of ULK Ltd., delivered a welcoming address that set the tone and officially declared the start programme. He underscored UPI’s commitment to providing students with the tools and opportunities to excel, stating, “UPI has strong partnerships to help students gain hands-on experience.” He further emphasized the well-equipped labs, physical and electronic libraries designed to facilitate this practical learning.

Prof. Dr. Balinda articulated a clear vision for the students: “We want to see you becoming excellent students that help nations to develop in all aspects with both strong technical and managerial skills.” He also stressed the importance of student responsibility, urging them to be diligent in their studies: “Be good students who attend class and coursework regularly as required so that they never find themselves being ineligible to sit for exams.”

The BTEC program at ULK Polytechnic operates on a competency-based curriculum, ensuring students acquire relevant and in-demand skills. ULK Polytechnic is well-resourced with “good infrastructure and faculty to help students gain the best experience possible.”

The Principal of ULK Polytechnic Institute Eng. Musabyimana Jean Pierre reinforced this commitment, presenting the UPI Authorities & Staff to the first cohort. “I assure you comprehensive and full support from the management to help you gain required knowledge and skills from UPI.”, he said.

Adding to the foundational support for academic success, the Director of Quality Assurance Dr. Nkundabaramye Vincent presented key articles on teaching and learning regulations. He strongly emphasized the importance of quality assurance to academic outcomes and students’ benefits, ensuring a high standard of education for all.

Dr. Roger Mugabe, the Director of Student Affairs, also extended a warm welcome to the new students and outlined the diverse extracurricular activities available at the university, encouraging a well-rounded student experience.

Following the official opening, students participated in an orientation session, familiarizing themselves with their classes, hostels, computer labs, and the library, marking a comprehensive start to their academic journey at ULK.
